After a system restore and telling the add hardware wizard to look in C:\windows\inf folder the usb flash drive now works. The reason, according to what I've read, is that XP does not have the "FIRST DRIVE LETTER" option that Win9x and 2000 offered.
I applied all updates for each service pack in order before upgrading to the next service pack.
changed it to '%SystemRoot%\inf' and voila, i am able to access the usb devices.your fix was perfect, after many hours of trying to update drivers for usb devices in winxp.
Re-installing the USB host drivers did nothing; they were working anyway, as they could identify devices successfully.

If that's the device status I'd expect that drive to now be working or, at minimum, at least appear under Disk Management. It is now resolved. So if is the USB composite driver that is corrupt, that is usbstor.sys right?
