With the command "ls" you can see in which directory you are. What a complete mess this upgrade was, from 11.04 to 11.10. In order to remove the '/var/run' completely, I had to do a 'umount -fl /var/run/samba/'. Log in as root or as a sudoer (you should be one).
After you move all of the contents, create the symlinks, reboot, and you should be okay.
