I didn't know about switching between DHCP and static IP until I read this, and that actually helped me fix something. You may want to check if there is a new firmware for the router or a new driver for the NIC. This fixed it! The workgroups are the same. The File and Printer sharing box for Microsoft Networks must be checked. solved My laptop can't see the wifi from my other (older) computer Desktop running XP.

You can click Change to change the name of the workgroup. By default, Windows does not allow the File and Printer Sharing service access through the firewall, so you have to manually allow access.
When I finally turned Norton Firewall off altogether, I still could not discover the other computers, but I could at least use \\ ivia "Tools" in the "Network and Sharing

Runs in my mind you can delete or at least leave the homegroup on the 8 unit, maybe that would help.

You have to tell it which subnet to allow through the firewall or you have to uninstall it.
The workstation could see the server ok, and worked normally, but I could not do remote installs to it (eg Trend CSSA).
Hopefully you'll have a simple solution, something I am obviously overlooking.

I'm guessing, since I'm switching LAN's quite often for my work, Win Vista got some garbage stuck in it's cache somewhere, and now it's creating problems.
