Solution was to use a standard CD-R and it worked like a charm.

Unfortunately there is a separate error now which I am about to google! It goes through the boot process for a bit, and then ends up with two different sets of messages so far. I used the md5 instructions you provided and discovered that the signature of my downloaded version did not match the signature on the releases page. Also tried burning on two different computers (just in case it was the CD burner that was bad).
