Unix does not require an export when the variable is written on the same line. They'd still need to connect to your machine somehow, unless you've enabled X TCP connections (Debian has them off by default). C'est à dire pas root si tu as fait ça proprement. Just use "ssh -X [email protected]", then type the name of the progam you want to use.

You open a terminal, then do an ssh to the remote box, then try to start Firefox on that box? The DISPLAY variable needs to be set before you SSH, otherwise the X forwarding will not know how to construct the tunnel and set the remote DISPLAY variable. So does that mean its an access control restriction? The problem is caused by user 'you' owning the display and then user 'root' wanting to get away with it. I worried that this would make my user account unable to run any X commands without sudoing (since root now owns X), but apparently not.
